What Is the Supersonic Worth Now?
The current trade-in value for a Dyson Supersonic ranges from $60 to $180, depending on its condition. When compared to its original price of $429 USD at release in 2016, it's clear that the device depreciates significantly over time. The condition plays a major role: "like new" units fetch close to the higher end of this range, while devices rated as "good," "fair," or "broken" will yield progressively lower values.
How to Wipe Data Before Recycling the Supersonic
Before trading in or recycling your Supersonic, wiping data is critical. Follow these steps:
- Remove any personal accounts or logins.
- Factory reset through the device settings menu.
- Remove any removable storage if applicable.
- Check the Dyson website for model-specific instructions to ensure thoroughness.
Manufacturers recommend following these steps precisely to prevent sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands.
Where to Recycle or Trade In the Supersonic
Several options are available for recycling or trading in your Supersonic:
- Brand Programme: Dyson offers a trade-in and recycling programme, accepting returns of their devices.
- Third-party Trade-ins: Websites like Gazelle and Back Market, Back Market, SellCell, Gazelle, and GameStop may buy back the Supersonic for cash. These platforms usually offer competitive prices based on condition and demand.
- Retailer Programmes: In-store programmes from retailers such as Best Buy in the US, Currys in the UK, and JB Hi-Fi in Australia provide both cash and store credit options.
- Certified electronic waste) Recyclers: If your Supersonic has no trade-in value due to severe damage or age, certified recyclers will safely dispose of it.
What Materials Are Recovered from the Supersonic?
The Supersonic contains several valuable materials that can be recovered during recycling:
- Copper, a key component in electrical wiring and connectors.
- Aluminum, used extensively for lightweight durability.
- Steel is present in parts requiring strong construction.
- Polycarbonate, a versatile plastic used in protective casings.
Each material contributes to the Supersonic's functionality but also makes recycling worthwhile. The device weighs 720g, indicating a significant amount of recoverable materials.
Environmental Impact of Recycling vs Landfill
Recycling the Supersonic offers substantial environmental benefits over landfill disposal. Mining one tonne of gold from ore generates around 18,000 tonnes of waste compared to recovering gold from circuit boards, which is up to 80 times more efficient. A single smartphone contains about $1-2 worth of recoverable precious metals.
sending lithium batteries to landfills can lead to fires and toxic metal leaching into groundwater, posing significant environmental risks. Recycling mitigates these issues by safely extracting valuable materials and reducing waste.

Data sanitisation steps
- Sign out of all cloud services - Apple ID, Google account, Microsoft account, Samsung account. For Apple devices, removing iCloud lock is mandatory or the next owner can't activate.
- Factory reset via Settings menu:
- iOS: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content
- Android: Settings → System → Reset → Factory data reset
- Windows: Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Remove everything
- macOS: Apple menu → System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset
- Verify the reset completed - powered-on device should land on setup-from-scratch screen.
- For sensitive data: factory reset alone is insufficient for SSDs (drive may retain recoverable data). Use a certified ITAD provider with NIST 800-88 guidelines Purge. See Hard Drive Destruction Cost Calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sell Supersonic if it's still on the carrier blocklist? No - blocked devices have negligible resale value and reputable buyback services reject them. Contact the original carrier to remove the block first (verify with original purchase records). If blocked due to non-payment, settle the account before listing.
What about devices with broken screens but working internals? Refurbishers like Music Magpie + BackMarket pay 40-60% of working-condition value for broken-screen devices. Worth listing - the screen swap costs them $30-$80 wholesale.
Should I remove the battery before recycling? No - certified recyclers want intact devices. Manual battery removal risks puncture + lithium-ion fire. Loose batteries also need separate hazmat shipping stream.
