What Is the WH-1000XM5 Worth Now?
The current trade-in value for a Sony WH-1000XM5 ranges from $80 to $200, depending on its condition. When new, it sold for $399 USD. A device in "like new" condition fetches the top end of that range, while one in "good" shape might get you 70-85% of the original price. Devices in "fair" condition will earn between 40 to 65%, and broken WH-1000XM5s may yield only 10 to 35%.
How to Wipe Data Before Recycling the WH-1000XM5
Unpairing from all connected devices via Bluetooth settings, resetting to factory defaults, removing the device from your account in the companion app, and cleaning the earbuds or headphones are important steps before trading them in. These actions ensure that no personal data remains on the WH-1000XM5.
Where to Recycle or Trade In the WH-1000XM5
Sony's Take Back Recycling Program is a reliable option for recycling your WH-1000XM5. Third-party services like
Back Market, SellCell, Gazelle, and GameStop offer trade-in options with cash rewards. Retailers such as Best Buy (US), Currys (UK), and JB Hi-Fi (Australia) also have programmes that provide either store credit or a mix of both cash and credit. For devices without trade-in value, certified
definition of e-waste recyclers ensure proper disposal.
What Materials Are Recovered from the WH-1000XM5?
The WH-1000XM5 contains aluminum, cobalt, lithium, copper, and plastic. Aluminium is used for lightweight but strong components in electronics like frames or casings. Cobalt is critical for battery production due to its ability to stabilize battery electrodes. Lithium batteries provide the power needed for active noise cancellation and Bluetooth connectivity. Copper conducts electricity efficiently and is found in wiring and circuit boards. Plastic parts can be recycled into new products, reducing waste.
Environmental Impact of Recycling vs Landfill
Recycling WH-1000XM5 components significantly reduces environmental damage compared to landfill disposal. Mining 1 tonne of gold from ore generates 18,000 tonnes of waste. In contrast, recovering gold from circuit boards is 80 times more efficient. Each smartphone contains roughly $1-$2 worth of recoverable precious metals. Lithium batteries in landfills can cause fires and contaminate groundwater with toxic substances. Recycling these components ensures that valuable materials are reused rather than discarded harmfully.
By following these guidelines, you help protect the environment while responsibly disposing of your WH-1000XM5 headphones or earbuds.

Data sanitisation steps
- Sign out of all cloud services - Apple ID, Google account, Microsoft account, Samsung account. For Apple devices, removing iCloud lock is mandatory or the next owner can't activate.
- Factory reset via Settings menu:
- iOS: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content
- Android: Settings → System → Reset → Factory data reset
- Windows: Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Remove everything
- macOS: Apple menu → System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset
- Verify the reset completed - powered-on device should land on setup-from-scratch screen.
- For sensitive data: factory reset alone is insufficient for SSDs (drive may retain recoverable data). Use a certified ITAD provider with NIST media sanitisation Purge. See Hard Drive Destruction Cost Calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sell WH-1000XM5 if it's still on the carrier blocklist? No - blocked devices have negligible resale value and reputable buyback services reject them. Contact the original carrier to remove the block first (verify with original purchase records). If blocked due to non-payment, settle the account before listing.
What about devices with broken screens but working internals? Refurbishers like Music Magpie + BackMarket pay 40-60% of working-condition value for broken-screen devices. Worth listing - the screen swap costs them $30-$80 wholesale.
Should I remove the battery before recycling? No - certified recyclers want intact devices. Manual battery removal risks puncture + lithium-ion fire. Loose batteries also need separate hazmat shipping stream.
