## What Is the iPad Air M2 Worth Now?
The current trade-in value for an iPad Air M2 ranges from $250 to $450 depending on its condition. When you bought it new for $599, that's a significant drop-off in value within just months of purchase. Devices rated "like new" fetch the highest prices at around 80% of original price, while those in "good" or "fair" condition get between 70-40% and 65-35%, respectively. Broken devices might only recoup a fraction of their initial cost due to repair costs.
How to Wipe Data Before Recycling the iPad Air M2
Wiping your data is important before you recycle or trade in your iPad Air M2. Follow these steps:
- Back up all your data to iCloud or a computer.
- Sign out of iCloud by going to Settings, tapping on your name at the top, and selecting "Sign Out."
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Unpair any connected Apple Pencil through Bluetooth settings.
- Remove any keyboard case if applicable.
Erasing everything ensures that no personal data remains on the device when it's recycled or traded in, protecting your privacy.
Where to Recycle or Trade In the iPad Air M2
You can recycle or trade in your iPad Air M2 at several places:
- Brand programme: Apple offers a trade-in program where you get store credit towards new devices. If it's too old for trade-in, they have recycling options as well.
- Third-party trade-in services: Websites like Gazelle and Back Market and Back Market provide cash payouts based on your device's condition. Gazelle is another option that gives you an estimated value upfront.
- Retailer programmes: Best Buy (US), Currys (UK), and JB Hi-Fi (Australia) offer both recycling services and trade-in options for store credit or gift cards.
Certified e-waste definition recyclers are ideal if your device isn't worth trading in but needs proper disposal to avoid environmental damage.
What Materials Are Recovered from the iPad Air M2?
The iPad Air M2 contains valuable materials like aluminum, cobalt, lithium, gold, copper, and glass. When recycled, these materials can be reused for manufacturing new devices or other products:
- Aluminum: The enclosure of your iPad is made with 100% recycled aluminum.
- Gold and Copper: These are used in circuit boards and connectors.
- Lithium: Found in the battery, it's important for energy storage.
- Cobalt: Used in lithium-ion batteries to improve efficiency.
With a weight of around 462g, even small amounts of these materials can add up when recycled at scale.
Environmental Impact of Recycling vs Landfill
Recycling your iPad Air M2 has far less environmental impact than sending it to landfill. For instance, mining one tonne of gold from ore produces 18,000 tonnes of waste. In contrast, recovering the same amount of gold from circuit boards is 80 times more efficient. Each smartphone contains about $1-2 worth of recoverable precious metals.
Lithium batteries in landfills can start fires and leach toxic materials into groundwater, posing significant risks to both wildlife and human health. Recycling reduces these hazards by safely extracting valuable materials for reuse.

Data sanitisation steps
- Sign out of all cloud services - Apple ID, Google account, Microsoft account, Samsung account. For Apple devices, removing iCloud lock is mandatory or the next owner can't activate.
- Factory reset via Settings menu:
- iOS: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content
- Android: Settings → System → Reset → Factory data reset
- Windows: Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Remove everything
- macOS: Apple menu → System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset
- Verify the reset completed - powered-on device should land on setup-from-scratch screen.
- For sensitive data: factory reset alone is insufficient for SSDs (drive may retain recoverable data). Use a certified ITAD provider with data sanitisation standard Purge. See Hard Drive Destruction Cost Calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sell iPad Air M2 if it's still on the carrier blocklist? No - blocked devices have negligible resale value and reputable buyback services reject them. Contact the original carrier to remove the block first (verify with original purchase records). If blocked due to non-payment, settle the account before listing.
What about devices with broken screens but working internals? Refurbishers like Music Magpie + BackMarket pay 40-60% of working-condition value for broken-screen devices. Worth listing - the screen swap costs them $30-$80 wholesale.
Should I remove the battery before recycling? No - certified recyclers want intact devices. Manual battery removal risks puncture + lithium-ion fire. Loose batteries also need separate hazmat shipping stream.
