When your Routers and Modems reaches end-of-life in Edinburgh, you have three routes: manufacturer take-back, council collection, or a certified recycler. Here's how each works in practice.
Where Can Residents Recycle Routers and Modems in Edinburgh?
Residents of Edinburgh can recycle their old routers and modems at Currys PC World, Argos stores, or by visiting the city's local council recycling centres (HWRCs). These locations offer free drop-off points for electronic waste like routers and modems under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations.
According to the World Economic Forum, e-waste definition is the fastest-growing waste stream globally.
When disposing of routers and modems in Edinburgh, it's important to follow specific guidelines. First, you should wipe any personal data from them using software tools designed for this purpose. If your router or modem has a battery, remove it before dropping off the device. This is important because batteries can be hazardous if not handled properly.
Free Drop-off Points for Routers and Modems in Edinburgh
Currys PC World and Argos are two convenient stores where you can drop off old routers and modems for free. Currys has a specific programme called Recycle Your Old Tech, which allows customers to bring their used electronics into any Currys store and they'll take care of the rest. Similarly, Argos offers an in-store recycling service through its Take Back programme. Both stores comply with WEEE regulations by ensuring that your old tech is disposed of responsibly.
According to the Apple Environmental Report 2024, apple recovered over 1 tonne of gold from recycled devices in 2023.
Special Handling Requirements for Routers and Modems
Before you recycle routers and modems, make sure to remove any batteries and wipe all data from the devices. This helps prevent potential environmental hazards and protects your personal information from falling into the wrong hands. Additionally, some councils may require that you bring the device to a specific drop-off point rather than leaving it in general recycling bins.
Trade-in Options for Working Routers and Modems
If your router or modem still functions properly but you want an upgrade, consider trading them in at Currys PC World or Argos. For example, if you trade in a working WiFi 5 router to Currys, they might offer up to £20 towards the purchase of a new WiFi 6 model. This can help offset some of the cost while responsibly disposing of your old equipment.
What Happens to Recycled Routers and Modems
Recycling routers and modems in Edinburgh means that these devices will be processed through WEEE regulations, ensuring their materials are recovered rather than ending up in landfills. Metals like copper, gold, and silver can be extracted from the circuit boards and reused in manufacturing new electronics. The plastics and other materials might also find a second life as raw material for various industries.
Routers and Modems recycling in Edinburgh isn't just about getting rid of old devices; it's about making sure that valuable resources are repurposed responsibly, reducing waste and environmental impact. By choosing to recycle your routers and modems through official channels like Currys PC World or Argos, you're playing a part in sustainable electronics management.
