You can't put batteries in regular household trash - they're hazardous waste in every US state, the UK, EU, Canada, and Australia. Lithium-ion batteries are also fire risks (responsible for ~2,800 waste-truck fires in the US in 2023 alone, per the Solid Waste Association of North America). But you can usually get them collected free from your home, if you know who to ask.

This finder shows free battery pickup services by your ZIP code or postcode, including big-box retailers (Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe's, Currys), council/municipal programs, and battery-specific specialists (Call2Recycle, batteryback, terracycle). Sources: Call2Recycle drop-off locator API, EPA Universal Waste Rule (40 CFR 273), UK National Battery Recycling Scheme, EU Battery Directive 2006/66/EC.

Why "just throw them in the bin" is dangerous

Lithium-ion batteries in waste-trucks cause fires. In 2023:

From January 2025, UK councils started prosecuting under EPA 1990 §33 for incorrect battery disposal - up to £5,000 fines per offence. US states with mandatory programs (CA, NY, WA, OR, MN, NJ, ME, VT) treat improper battery disposal as universal-waste violation.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I just put batteries in the recycling bin?

Standard recycling facilities aren't equipped to handle batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are punctured during sorting, causing fires (~2,800 in US waste trucks in 2023). All batteries are universal-waste-classified under EPA + UK WEEE. Always use a dedicated battery drop-off.

What happens to batteries after they're collected?

Lithium-ion: recycled at hydrometallurgical plants (Li-Cycle, Redwood Materials, Glencore Belgium) - recover lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper. Lead-acid: 99% recycling rate, lead smelted and reused in new batteries (closed loop). Alkaline: increasingly recycled into zinc + steel; some still landfilled (allowed since 1996 EU ban on mercury content).

My phone has a built-in battery - can I just drop the whole phone for battery recycling?

No - drop the phone at an e-waste recycler (which handles battery extraction). Battery-only drop-offs (Call2Recycle, B-cycle) don't accept whole devices. For phones with attached batteries, use Best Buy / Apple / Currys / phone trade-in instead.

Can I post lithium batteries to a recycler?

Limited. Lithium-ion under 100 Wh can be posted in the US via USPS Ground (1 battery per box) - UN 3091/3481 packing required. UK Royal Mail bans lithium-ion posting since 2024 (use Parcelforce or DPD with hazmat surcharge). Most consumers should use local drop-off; mail-back is mainly for businesses.

What if a battery has swollen / leaked?

Swollen lithium-ion: do not puncture, do not put in regular packaging. Place in sand or vermiculite in a metal container with the lid loose (not sealed). Call your local fire department's non-emergency line for guidance. Most US municipalities and UK councils accept swollen batteries as HHW free of charge with advance booking.
